SPRINGHOUSE FIRE DEPARTMENT
NO GO...
March 5th, 2003 the community of Springhouse came to a crossroads with getting our fire department up and operational. Things were looking very promising late last year when Corrina Thompson and Duff Gunderson generously offered the fire department the option to lease a one acre parcel on the front of their property on Dog Creek Road to build our fire/community hall.
After some research it was discovered that if we accepted to lease this property we would not be able to receive grants for the construction of our building. With a limited budget it was very important that we be able to receive a grant. At our meeting in February it was then agreed upon to put the lease on hold until we could determine and research other options.
At our community meeting on March 5th, Susan Tritt made a presentation to the Springhouse Community with requirements for the "operation and construction" of a Volunteer Fire Department with and without Cariboo Regional District (CRD) involvement. It was then discovered that the operating costs such as WCB and insurance required without the CRD would be far too substantial for our small community members to undertake. With no guaranteed income other than fundraising
we felt we would not be able to commit to these costs.
The Springhouse Community Association/Fire Department has worked very hard in trying to get the Fire Department up and operational but have agreed it is not feasible at this time. Although we will not be an active Fire Department, we will remain active in the community and will focus our efforts on community events and community projects. We agreed to keep the fire truck to assist in grass burning and other community events.
We would like to thank everyone in the community who has worked hard in supporting our efforts.
Special thanks to Karen and Sepp who have stored the fire truck for us over the past year and thanks to Terry and Denise who have come forward and offered the use of their red barn to store the fire truck.
